- Put a/an before a singular countable noun.
For example: "a cat" and "an elephant"
- An + noun that begins with a vowel. Also, we use "an" when the first sound of the word is pronounced as a vowel.
For example: "an actor" and "an historian"
- A + noun that begins in consonant.
For example: "a cake"
- Put a/an before work professions.
For example: "a doctor" and "an engineer"
- We use "the" for especific things.
For example: "The house of my grandmother"
- We use "the" to form the superlative.
For example: "The final exam is the most important" and "the biggest"
- We don't use "the" with possessives and determiners.
For example: "I like this jacket"
- We don't use "the" with expressions for meal.
For example: "have dinner"
- We don't put articles with general things.
For example: "I like animals"
- We don't put articles for express "the majority of".
For example: "The majority of students pass the exam" and "Most birds can fly".
- We put zero article with a plural or uncountable noun.
For example: "His scarf is made of wool" and "We are afraid of spiders"
